Lot Essay

Launched in 1998 and ceasing in 2002, Patek Philippe reference 5070J was the first execution of the 5070 series with a total production count of less than 1000 pieces. Unusual for its time, the timepiece was housed in a large 42mm yellow gold case, signifying a new leap into the then contemporary tastes and preferences.

The design of the manually wound chronograph can be traced back to 1940s Patek Philippe chronographs. The watch features a black dial with gilt-styled font which harmoniously complements the gold case. Additionally, a tachymeter and 1/5 of a second graduations scale are utilized, giving the timepiece a vibrant, jovial, aesthetic. Further, the bezel is stepped, and the lugs are straight, helping complete the watch’s prominence on the wrist.

Common with its production era, the movement powering reference 5070 is Patek Philippe caliber CH 27-70, a Lemania-based movement beating away at a pleasurable rate of 18,000 vibrations per hour. The slower beat rate can be enjoyed via the chronograph hand which complements the vintage charm of the wristwatch. A sapphire case back displays the beautiful hand finished movement which demonstrates the proficiency in Patek Philippe watchmakers, while bringing the vintage-styled chronograph into modernity.
