Lot Essay


Douglas Stuart Allen (1923-2021) was an American artist who travelled to Europe after the Second World War to study the visual arts at the Accademia di belle Arti in Rome, as well as the Académie Julian and Académie de la Grande Chaumiere in Paris. Allen also trained under Oskar Kokoschka in the early 1950s, developing a lifelong mentorship and friendship with the German Expressionist artist.
