Lot Essay

For a similar figure in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, cf. O. Negbi, Canaanite Gods in Metal, Tel Aviv, 1976, pp. 46-49, fig. 130, no. 1440. Seated gods such as this are believed to represent El, the head of the Canaanite pantheon who was the subject of widespread worship in the Levant during the later second millennium B.C.
