Lot Essay

Stylistically this intriguing and elegant drawing appears to be by a British artist working in Rome in the 1770s. The inscription on the verso seems to refer to the Scottish-born landscape painter Jacob More (1740-1793), whose self-portrait, painted in Rome in 1783, is in the Uffizi (see 'Gli Uffizi', catalogo generale, Firenze, 1979, p. 938, cat. A617), but no portrait drawings of this type by him are known.
