A GEORGE III SILVER-GILT COMPOSITE TEA SERVICE
LONDON, MARK OF JOHN EMES, 1803 AND 1804 AND REBECCA EMES AND EDWARD BARNARD, 1813
Comprising a teapot with curved spout and stand, a two-handled sugar basin, cover and stand on three ball feet, and with reeded vine bracket handles, a tea caddy and a cream jug, each applied with a band of basket weave and with husk borders, a pair of circular muffin dishes and domed covers, and a glass butter dish, cracked, with cover and stand on four palmette feet, each with laurel and beaded border, the covers with foliage and acanthus bud finials, each engraved with a coat-of-arms beneath an earl's coronet, fully marked, engraved with scratchweights, the muffin dishes stands 19=10 and 19=13, the teapot 20=7, the teapot stand 6=4, the sugar vase 20=15, and the milk jug 9=3

The arms are those of Shirley impaling Mundy for Robert Shirley, 7th Earl Ferrers (1756-1827) and his second wife Elizabeth Mundy (d.1827), daughter of Wrightson Mundy of Markeaton, co. Derby, whom he married in 1790.

ROBERT SHIRLEY, 7TH EARL FERRERS
The son of the 6th Earl, Robert succeeded his father 1787. His first wife Elizabeth Prentise was the daughter of John Prentise, whom he married in 1778. Their only son was born in November the same year. She died in 1799 and he married secondly Elizabeth Mundy (d.1827), daughter of Wrightson Mundy of Markeaton. Their arms are engraved on this lot. They had no children so the title and the main estates passed to Lord Ferrers' brother Washington, however, the lesser Leicestershire estates passed to his natural daughter, Caroline Shirley (1818–1897). Lord Ferrers had a great interest in genealogy as a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries.
