Lot Essay

Camillo Picconi's accounts record another cameo-set box, described on June 24, 1800: 'una scatola di tartaruga nera, foderata d'oro di bollo e con cameo incassato sul coperchio' [a box in black tortoiseshell, lined with stamped gold and with a recessed cameo on the lid] (C. G. Bulgari, Argentieri Gemmari e Orafi Italia, vol. II, p. 270).
