MARK OF AYME VIDEAU, LONDON, 1748
Helmet shaped and each on shaped oval foot cast and chased with shells and scrolls, with quilted leaf-capped double scroll handles rising from shells, the bodies applied on each side with elaborate rococo foliage, scrolls and grotesque mask cartouches, one engraved with a crest, the other with a coat-of-arms, applied beneath the lip with a shell, marked on undersides
9 in. (22.9 cm.) long
44 oz. 10 dwt. (1,247 gr.)
The arms are those of Gresley of Drakelow co. Derby with Hood in pretence, for Sir Thomas Gresley, 5th Bt. 1722-1753) and his wife Wilmot Hood, daughter and heir of Alderman Hood of Scraptoft, Leicester, whom he married in 1749.

Lot Essay


SIR THOMAS GRESLEY 5TH BT.
Educated at Balliol College, Oxford, he was the son of Sir Thomas Gresley 4th Bt. and Dorothy, the daughter and heir of Sir William Bowyer 4th Bt., whose sizable estates he would inherit from his mother. Although he was elected as M.P. for Lichfield in 1753 he died of smallpox before he could be sworn into the seat. He was succeeded by his younger brother.
