Lot Essay

This drawing was part of a large group of circa twenty drawings by Cauvet, formerly in the collection of the Comtesse de Béarn, dispersed at auction in Paris in 1995. Most sheets from the group, including the present work, served as print models for the artist’s Receuil d’ornemens; others are in the Morgan Library and Museums, New York (inv. 1997.84), and the pair previously in the sale Christie’s, New York, 25 January 2007, lot 79.
