Youqua (active 1840-1870)
An album containing twelve gouaches of junks and other vessels, n.p. [Canton or Hong Kong], n.d. [1840-1870].
On 12 leaves, 245 x 320mm, the gouaches c.180 x c.270mm, opaque watercolour on pith paper, mounted with silk ribbon (occasional small losses to the pith paper). Provenance: 'Youqua Painter, Old Street, No. 34'; printed label on verso of upper flyleaf.

An album of twelve finely-finished gouaches depicting Chinese junks and other vessels of the mid-19th century, presumably studies taken from the harbours of Canton, Hong Kong and elsewhere. Youqua was an export painter active from the 1840s to the 1870s who set up workshops in Canton and Hong Kong under the name 'Yeehing' (see G. Clunas, Chinese Export Watercolours, 1984). For further discussion on pith paper (derived from the pith of Tetrapanax papyrifera) paintings, see C. L. Crossmann, The Decorative Arts of the China Trade, 1991, pp.200-202, and colour plate 70 and pls. 105 and 106 for examples of Youqua's pith paper work and label.
