Original French edition, ‘This work contains a number of plates of beetles, some very splendid; they were produced by Martyn's Academy for illustrating and painting natural history’ (Knight). This edition was published simultaneously in English and in French and is among one of the most attractive early colour-plate books on coleoptera. Quarto (336 x 271mm). Text in French, engraved title with 42 hand-coloured engraved plates showing 535 coleoptera (lacking two engraved plates of medals, scattered spotting throughout, most heavily affecting letterpress). Dark green Russia gilt, covers panelled in gilt and blind, spine with two red morocco labels lettered in gilt, gilt turn-ins and edges (extremities rubbed and scuffed, most heavily affecting corners and foot of spine, morocco label on spine peeling and chipped, joint with some splitting). Provenance: The Earls of Derby (armorial bookplate).
