Lot Essay

Duan Zi’an, a native of Poyang county, Jiangxi province, was a pioneer of xin fengcai (nouveau famille rose porcelain) school of painters and was active during the 1920s-30s. Duan was known to appropriate the airy blankness from Yuan-dynasty (1279-1368) paintings to create a nonchalant composition on his painted porcelains. His naturalistic yet dramatic treatment of light and shadow also displays the influence of modern Western oil painting. It is noteworthy that Duan was trained in a variety of scripts in traditional Chinese calligraphy. The inscription in cursive-script inscribed on the present plaque exemplifies his literary sophistication.
