Finnegans Wake
James Joyce
JOYCE, James (1882-1941). Finnegans Wake. London: Faber & Faber Limited; New York: The Viking Press, 1939.

First edition, limited issue, signed by Joyce and preserving the original slipcase and mailing carton. This is no. 187 of 425 copies printed on handmade paper and specially bound. One of Joyce’s final published works, Finnegans Wake pushes the boundaries of literary experimentation by employing a cyclical structure that defies conventional concepts of beginning and end. The book was jointly issued by Faber & Faber and The Viking Press, with the first 125 copies reserved for the UK and the remaining 300 for the US. Slocum & Cahoon A49.

Octavo. (Trivial intermittent spotting.) Original brick red buckram, lettered in gilt on spine, bottom and fore-edge untrimmed, top edge gilt (faintest wear to corners); publisher’s yellow cloth slipcase and original mailing carton both bearing the number 187 (slipcase with minor wear and soiling; carton somewhat worn and darkened, pen marks to one edge, lacking one flap); modern slipcase lettered in gilt on spine.
