Lot Essay

Although not exhibited at the Grosvenor Gallery, the flagship of advanced Aestheticism, this depiction of clematis in a Chinese blue and white vase lies firmly in Aesthetic taste. William Jabez Muckley was the leading member of the family of artists of that name, and specialised in flower painting. He was successively headmaster of the Burslem, Wolverhampton and Manchester Schools of Art. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, the British Institution and elsewhere, and also practiced glass engraving.
