Lot Essay

Any example of the celebrated ‘Dato-Compax’ reference 6036 is an extreme rarity, mostly cased in stainless steel, an example in 18k gold is a great prize indeed – today, only 65 specimens cased in yellow gold are known publicly.

Moreover, the present watch is without a doubt, one of the most beautiful and best preserved examples ever seen in public. Visually, it greatly impresses with its wonderful ‘embossed’ silvered dial, highlighted by sunken pyramidal hour markers and stunning outer blue date indication. The calendar indications for the day of the week and month are in English. The case is unbelievably crisp and well-preserved, retaining excellent definition to all angles and facets, and maintaining clearly visible gold mark on the back of the lower right lug and clearly legible numbers in between the lugs. The gold has developed the wonderful purple patina that is only seen on watches that have lain untouched in a safe for many years. Only the finest and best-preserved examples of this reference can fully display the true beauty and fascinating personality of this ultra-rare model.

Uniting rarity, mechanical complexity and superlative condition, the present watch represents a golden opportunity for the discerning collector of the finest vintage Rolex watches to add this legendary model to his or her collection.

Reference 6036
Launched in 1950, reference 6036 was introduced as an Oyster chronograph model enhanced by a full triple-date calendar. No other Rolex model offered more complications. Available in either stainless steel, yellow gold, or pink gold, with a variety of different dial designs, reference 6036 was in production until the very early 1960s.
