Lot Essay

We are very grateful to Roger Cole and Max Waterhouse for their assistance in preparing this catalogue entry. Roger Cole is preparing a forthcoming catalogue raisonné of works by Gaudier-Brzeska.

This is one of two works commissioned by General Sir Ian and Lady Hamilton through the Omega Workshops in Spring 1914, following Gaudier-Brzeska’s modelling of a bird-bath for Roger Fry’s garden at Durbins, near Guildford, in the same year. Roger Cole comments that this model displays ‘direct influences from Gaudier’s study of primitive sculpture’ (R. Cole, Burning to Speak: The Life and Art of Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, Oxford, 1978, p. 114).
