Lot Essay

The commanding form and excellent potting of this meiping, complemented by the handsome and lustrous glaze, distinguish it as an excellent example of its type.

Compare to two very similar Longquan celadon meiping and covers, one smaller in the collection of National Palace Museum, Taipei, illustrated in Green. Longquan Celadon of the Ming Dynasty, Taipei, 2009, pp. 130-131, no. 64 (fig. 1); the other illustrated in Selected Treasures of Chinese Art: Min Chiu Society Thirtieth Anniversary Exhibition, Hong Kong, 1990, pp.280-281, no. 125.

Another similar Longquan celadon meiping and cover carved with bamboo and prunus is in the collection of Palace Museum, Beijing, see collection no.XIN00062697 on the digital archive.
