Lot Essay

Each of rectangular form the patina of a warm honey-brown color accented with an attractive grain, inlaid on the cover in soapstone, buffalo horn, stained bone, turquoise, wood and mother-of-pearl with birds in flight and perched amidst the leafy branches of viburnum, peony, magnolia, plum and rose, the edges of both boxes and covers with fine beading.

This appears to be the largest pair of hardstone inlaid huanghuali boxes to be published. Compare to a single example of this large size, a huanghuali inlaid scroll box depicting a bird perched on a long-gnarled branch with magnolia buds and blossoms, sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong, Portable Treasures, The Dr. S.Y. Yip Collection, 5 April 2017, lot 3523.
