Lot Essay

Qianlong period wash basins have been preserved in enamel, cloisonné
enamel, baitong and even porcelain, however this carved cinnabar lacquer examples lined with a beautifully incised copper inner basin is extremely rare. Similar decoration can be found on a Qianlong-period turquoise-ground famille rose 'lotus' jardinière in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, collection number: guci009563N000000000. This would have been an extravagant commission when ordered from the imperial workshops.
