Lot Essay

Edward Russell was the fourth, and youngest, son of Francis Russell, 4th Earl of Bedford and his wife, Catherine Brydges. Edward married Penelope Hill, daughter of Sir Moyses Hill of Hillsborough Castle and they had four children, including Admiral Edward Russell, 1st Earl of Orford (see lot 55). The painting relates to a work sold from the collection of the Marquess of Downshire, on 19 March 2022, at Tennants Auctioneers, attributed to Remigius van Leemput. The present work appears to have been worked up from an oval into a square format soon after its inception, as the handling appears consistent across the painting.
