Lot Essay

Joris van der Haagen at times collaborated with a number of other artists, including Dirck Wyntrack, Paulus Potter, Ludolf de Jongh and Nicolaes Berchem, who provided the figures in several of his paintings. The animals and figure in the painting's central foreground are close in style to those of Adriaen van de Velde, an artist who has likewise been suggested as the hand responsible for the staffage in van der Haagen's Family portrait before a country house in the Villa Vauban - Musée d’Art de la Ville de Luxembourg, Luxembourg (inv. no. 138).
