Lot Essay

This drawing is stamped with a collectors mark composed of a leopard or a lion, with a banner beneath holding the motto 'Tenax in Fide' which translates as 'held in faith'. This motto seems to have belonged to Horace James Smith (1829-1907), later Bosanquet-Smith, and also to the Abel-Smith family, but it is not known to whose collecting it relates.
