Lot Essay

This magnificent reference 570 can only be described as stunning. Not only does it have breathtaking looks, but also exceptional rarity as one of only 5 pink gold reference 570s with a two-tone pink dial and indirect center seconds known publicly.

In the rarefied world of Patek Philippe, “Pink on pink” is one of the most enchanting phrases a distinguished collector could wish to hear when regarding a vintage timepiece. The present watch, a “Grande Calatrava” reference 570 is one of the finest known, with its wonderfully crisp pink gold case with brushed and polished surfaces, strong and clear hallmarks and awesome Extract-confirmed two-tone pink dial with beautifully raised engraved-enameled signature.

The present watch is an early and exceptional first series reference 570R SC dating to 1941, the third year of production, identifiable by its caliber 12-120 SCi movement. Such ‘time-only’ wristwatches may seem quite simple, their beauty lies in the minimalist Bauhaus design and details such as the hand-finished indices, incredible engraved-enamel inscriptions and railway minute track, and a contrasting fire-blued steel sweep seconds hand. This combination of pink dial, pink gold case and indirect center seconds is a great rarity. In fact, only 5 examples of reference 570 known with this precise configuration.

The indirect center seconds mechanism, almost never seen in reference 570, was realized for Patek Philippe by the Victorin Piguet workshops by adding the necessary additional center seconds gearing to existing 12’’’ 120 movements.

Introduced in 1938, reference 570 was the first large Calatrava produced in series and was manufactured for a staggering 34 years until 1972. Measuring 35mm in diameter (opposed to its predecessor, reference 96 measuring 30.5mm), the model was incredibly popular and offered in a plethora of different case metals, dial colors, and configurations over the decades. In remarkable condition with an incredibly well-preserved case featuring strong architecture, lines, and crisp hallmarks, and its stunning pink salmon dial with a blued seconds hand, the present 570 is an almost impossibly rare combination in remarkable condition.

A dream piece and serious prize for the collector, it is unlikely that a reference 570 of this astounding aesthetic and technical rarity will be seen again for many years.
