Lot Essay

Joseph Noel Paton drew many subjects from John Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress from his return to Edinburgh in 1857 well into the 1870s. The present picture is probably a preliminary sketch for the work recorded in his studio in 1873 and now in Aberdeen Art Gallery.
