Lot Essay

After arriving to Europe to study art in late 1853, Albert Bierstadt traveled throughout Italy, arriving to Naples in 1857. Setting off for the island of Capri on May 30, 1857, alongside fellow artist Sanford Robinson Gifford, Bierstadt stayed until June 26 creating studies, such as the present work.
