Lot Essay

The present work depicts a rock formation in the Farallon Islands nicknamed the "Devil's Teeth" by nineteenth century mariners. Bierstadt depicts Southeast Farallon Island with Arch Rock at center and Sugarloaf at right. The artist visited the Islands, located off the coast of San Francisco, in April 1872.
