Lot Essay

Dr. Charles Winfield (1789-1859) and his wife Margaret Crawford (1791-1828) lived together in Orange County, New York. Margaret passed away in 1828, shortly after these portraits were executed. Charles died on New Year's Day in 1859. The January 20th edition of the Christian Intelligencer of the Reformed Dutch Church notes his death and that he was a practicing physician for nearly fifty years.
