Lot Essay

José Gudiol, who published the painting in 1970 as by Goya, considered the portrait to be typical of the artist's society portraits around 1800. The last time the picture was offered at auction in 1990, the sale catalogue noted that an attribution to Agustín Esteve y Marqués had also been proposed.
