Lot Essay

The figural arrangement in this painting derives from a print of the same subject by the Master M.Z., datable to around 1500 (Art Institute of Chicago, inv. 1956.815). The painter has altered the landscape background, omitted the horsemen in the middle distance, and has changed the design of the contraption with spiked wheels, on which Catherine was condemned to death but miraculously freed. A wooden mast with a black turning handle and a broken wheel are visible just behind Saint Catherine's halo.
