Lot Essay

A copy of three of the four heads in plate 8 of Jean-Baptiste Hutin’s set of engravings after Boucher’s drawings entitled Recueil de Differents caractères de Testes Dessinées d’après la Colonne Trajane par François Boucher Peintre du Roy published in Paris in 1750. As Alastair Laing pointed out, Boucher did not make copies of the Trajan’s Column in Rome, but rather he sketched the heads copying the casts of the column that were kept at the Académie.

We thank Alastair Laing for his kind help in cataloguing this lot.
