Lot Essay

Other similar studies depicting shepherds and shepherdesses by the artist are known (see Gordon-Smith, op. cit., nos. 308, 309, ill.). One of these can be dated 1804, when Pillement returned to his native Lyon after having spent much of his career between Vienna, Poland, France and Portugal.
