Lot Essay

François Joseph Deutsch was a pupil of Girodet. He was a painter and lithographer, having picked up the new medium like many of Girodet’s other students. Deutsch exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1822 and 1837. Other similar academic nude studies are in the Crocker Museum of Art in Sacramento and in the San Antonio Museum of Art. Two further male academics were recently on the art market (Sotheby’s, New York, 28 January 2015, lot 169).
