Lot Essay

This composition was translated into print by Gilles Demarteau (1722-1776). According to the date on the engraving Boucher executed the model in 1768, probably a painting, two years before his death. The drawing is characteristic of Boucher’s studies of children produced in the last years of his career.

We are grateful to Alastair Laing for confirming the attribution of the drawing on the basis of a photograph.
