Lot Essay

This red chalk drawing reproduces a charming painting of a young boy by Jean-Baptiste Greuze, which belonged to Ange-Laurent de La Live de Jully (1725-1779) and was recently sold at auction (Christie’s, Paris, 23 June 2010, lot 64). The composition was translated into engraving by the German draftsman and engraver Carl Guttenberg (1743-1790). The present drawing is squared for transfer and could be the preparatory study for the print.
