Lot Essay

The attribution of this delicate study of trees to Claude was confirmed by Marcel Roethlisberger in 1991. The scholar considered it an early work of the 1630s. Similar clusters of trees appear in other drawings by the artist throughout his career (see for example, M. Roethlisberger, Claude Lorrain. The Drawings, Los Angeles, 1968, I, nos. 63, 275, ill.).
