Lot Essay

The flat oval gem is engraved with a seated, bearded satyr. He holds a thyrsus over his shoulders and is fondling the head of a goat that stands before him. The gem is mounted as a swivel ring in a 19th century gold setting; the underside of the bezel is incised with the number 4113.
