Lot Essay

May Milton was an English dancer who appeared at the Moulin Rouge, one of Paris's most popular café-concerts. This poster was commissioned by Milton herself to advertise her tour of the United States. Pablo Picasso later included an image of this print in the background of The Blue Room, his 1901 Blue Period painting now at the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C.
