Lot Essay

Sybil Masters married Humphrey Wyrley, Prothonotory of the Court of Common Pleas and a Justice of the Peace for Staffordshire. She is shown here in a green silk gown and pearl necklace, her pose likely inspired by the portraits of Sir Anthony van Dyck, suggesting a date of circa 1650.
