PIETER DIRCKSZ. VAN SANTVOORT (1604-1635), VIEW OF A DUTCH VILLAGE, OIL ON PANEL

Paintings by Pieter van Santvoort (1604-1635), who died very young at the age of thirty-one, are rare. However, his fluid style and warm palette with its range of ochres are highly distinctive. They are also to be found in the Dune Landscape, signed and dated 1625 (Gemäldegalerie, Berlin, inv. no. 1985). In the Berlin painting and the present work, the artist constructs the composition with a road at its centre that guides the viewer's gaze from the foreground to the background of the scene, adding a sense of recession that animates the simplicity of the tonal landscape.

Rares sont les tableaux de Pieter van Santvoort (1604-1635), mort très jeune à l’âge de trente-et-un ans. Or, son style fluide et sa palette chaude avec tout un camaïeu d’ocres sont très distinctifs. Nous les retrouvons aussi dans le Paysage de dunes avec ferme et personnages, tableau qui est signé et daté 1625 (Gemäldegalerie, Berlin, no. inv. 1985). Dans le tableau berlinois et l’œuvre ci-présente, l’artiste construit la composition avec en son centre une route qui guide le regard du spectateur du premier plan vers l'arrière de la scène, ajoutant un mouvement de recul qui anime la simplicité du paysage tonale.
