Lot Essay

Built between 1758 and 1763, Sir John Elwill, 4th Baronet, commissioned the celebrated architect Stiff Leadbetter (c.1705-1766) to design his property, called 'Elvill's', now known as 'Castle Hill'. Englefield Green is a short distance from Windsor Great Park, and Sandby executed a number of watercolours of the area, examples of which can be found in the Royal Collection and the Nottingham City Museums and Galleries. In Sandby's 1777 A Collection of Landscapes, he commented on the location of Elvill's: '... In a word, the country for several miles round is more agreeable than can be imagined.'
