Lot Essay

Samuel Prout was one of the first British artists to exhibit Venetian views, following his visit during his continental tour of 1824.

Following his initial tours, Prout moved to de Crespigny Terrace, Camberwell in 1844 (R. Lockett, Samuel Prout 1753-1852, London, 1985, p. 91), so the present sheet is likely to have been executed between 1844 and 1850, when, according to Prout’s account book, the artist sold a large drawing of the Ducal Palace with Santa Maria della Salute to John Clowes Grundy (1806–1867), a collector and dealer from Manchester, England. In his ledger, Prout had noted the dimensions of the artwork that he sold to Grundy as 30 x 21 in., corresponds in reverse almost exactly with the dimensions of the present watercolour.

For another Venetian view by the artist, see lot 240.
