Lot Essay


Roberts was at Jaffa from 25 to 27 March 1839. A second watercolour, Jaffa looking south, was also dated 26 March and lithographed as pl. 2 of vol. II of The Holy Land. The accompanying note remarks that 'Here Noah is said to have built the Ark! - here Andromeda to have been exposed to the Sea-Monster...'.
