Lot Essay

Impressions of the first state of this print are very rare; to our knowledge, only five impressions in public collections are known. Hollstein records three impressions (Baltimore, Berlin and Vienna), to which we can add the examples in Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. The only one to have appeared at auction within the last thirty years is the present example, sold at Sotheby's in 1998.
