Lot Essay

This is one of an interesting group of 'art' lithographic fans made in 1904 as a memorial to the lithographer Henry [Bonaventure] Monnier (1805-1877)by his admirers including Jacques Villon. The fan advertises an annual gala costume event to benefit artists and humorists named after Monnier; it is inscribed "Fete Henry Monnier au profit de la caisse de secours des dessinateurs-humoristes Casino de Paris 1er Juin 1904.
This was the first fan Colin Lawton Johnson bought in Atlanta in 1946
