Lot Essay

Included in this panoply is a Chalcidian helmet, an anatomical cuirass and a pair of greaves. The helmet has a raised median ridge over the crown with coiled snake-headed plume holders and incised wings on either side. The peaked pediment at the front, which is centered by a circular gorgoneion flanked by a pair of winged griffins, narrows at the sides and terminates in volutes before the ear openings. The hinged cheek-guard is embossed with a ram's head.

The breast-plate of the cuirass has a circle of perforations defining the nipples, perhaps to secure now-missing overlays, and a crescentic navel above the lower edge. A beaded wire adorns the edges of the front-, back- and side-plates, and there are conforming rings and fittings preserved for attachment. The greaves have incised bands along the perimeter.

For a closely-related helmet, similarly adorned with a gorgoneion and griffins, and also formerly in the collection of Axel Guttmann, see no. X383 in Hixenbaugh, op. cit. For a cuirass of similar form, also with perforations at the nipples, but preserving the overlays, see the example now in Syracuse, p. 423 in G.P. Carratelli, ed., The Western Greeks.
