Lot Essay

Specializing in allegorical works and weightless female nudes, the Florentine sculptor, Ferdinando Andreini, executed a series of works of technically exquisite caliber such as the present figure of Primavera. Another such example is an Allegory of Night, offered as lot 65 in this sale. A model of Primavera was further exhibited at the St. Louis World's Fair of 1904 in the Italian Statuary Manufacturer's building, illustrated here. A slightly larger example of this finely-carved allegory of Spring sold at Sotheby's, New York, 6 November 2014, lot 29 ($209,000).
