Commandée par la famille Bardou-Job, propriétaire de la marque JOB de papier à cigarettes, cette œuvre fait partie d’un ensemble de quatre compositions représentant des fumeuses. Chaque gouache sur papier représente une femme élégante en buste tenant une cigarette à la main. Elles furent accrochées dans la pièce de réception du Château de Valmy.
Alors que la marque a passé plusieurs commandes d’affiches à des artistes célèbres à l’époque comme Mucha, cette série ne semble pas avoir une destination publicitaire (voir I. Millman, Georges de Feure, cat. exp., Tokyo, Odakyu Grand Gallery ; Osaka, Daimaru Museum, 1990, p. 129).

Commissioned by the Bardou-Job family, owners of the JOB brand of cigarette paper, this work is one of a set of four compositions depicting female smokers. Each gouache on paper depicts a bust of an elegant woman holding a cigarette in her hand. They were hung in the reception room of Château de Valmy.
Although the brand commissioned several posters from famous artists of the time, such as Mucha, this series does not appear to have been designed for advertising purposes (see I. Millman, Georges de Feure, exhib. cat., Tokyo, Odakyu Grand Gallery ; Osaka, Daimaru Museum, 1990, p. 129).
