Lot Essay

Though Hagop undoubtedly was mainly inspired by Safavid and Mughal rugs in his designs, these cartoons show engagement with other weaving traditions. The Seljuk-style cartoons find expression in an extraordinary early 20th century Turkish silk prayer rug which was sold in these Rooms, 14 April 1976, lot 22, which is published Ian Bennett, Rugs and Carpets of the World, London, 1977, p.216, fig.214).
