Lot Essay

The inclusion of a stepped colourful triangle at each end of the octagonal purple medallion is reminiscent of a fragment in the Orient Stars collection, which may have been associated with a rug of 'large pattern Holbein' design (Heinrich Kirchheim et al., Orient Stars: a Carpet Collection, Stuttgart, 1993, p.216, no.141). A complete yastik of very similar design to the present lot - the octagonal medallion containing 'rams horn' motifs growing out of a central colourful diamond, with a chocolate-brown border of hooked 's' shaped motifs with floral lappets at the upper and lower ends - was sold in these Rooms, 8 April 2014, lot 6.
