Lot Essay

We are very grateful to Professor Brian Whitton for his assistance in cataloguing this lot.

The collection of Lord Myners, CBE (1948-2022), focusses on the esteemed St Ives group of artists, tracking the history of a small Cornish fishing village becoming an epicentre of modern art in post-war Britain. Myners’ biography tells a similar story, from a local Cornishman to an influential patron. The quality of this collection reflects his generous support of the arts as a former trustee of the Royal Academy, Glyndebourne, the National Maritime Museum, and a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. His efforts in championing Britain’s rich cultural history were recognised with his appointment as Chair of Tate St Ives in 2002, and nationally as Chairman of Tate Trustees in April 2004.
