Lot Essay

E.C. (Teddy) Hodgkin (1913-2006) was a journalist and foreign editor at The Times. Helen Sutherland was close to the Hodgkin family (see N. Gray (intro.), exhibition catalogue, The Helen Sutherland Collection: a Pioneer Collection of the 1930s, Arts Council, 1970), and it was Helen Sutherland who encouraged Teddy Hodgkin to purchase the current lot (for more about Helen Sutherland see Cumbrian Landscape, lot 257). Teddy Hodgkin wrote a short unpublished memoir about Helen Sutherland (Tate archive TGA 958.1).

We are very grateful to Jovan Nicholson for preparing this catalogue entry.
